OOCYTE TRANSFER
The purpose of the Oocyte Transfer Program is to
establish pregnancies from valuable breeding mares that
are unable to become pregnant themselves. Subjects for
which this advanced reproductive technology is
appropriate are mares with chronic uterine disease,
cervical lacerations, or other damage to the
reproductive tract that prohibit the mare from
conceiving or supporting an embryo in the uterus for any
length of time. This procedure should only be used on
mares which are not suitable candidates for routine
embryo transfer (mares in which viable embryos are
seldom recovered from uterine flushes obtained 7 days
after breeding). Because of the expense of the
technology involved and the amount of labor associated
with Oocyte Transfer, foals from the enrolled mares
should be extremely valuable, justifying the increased
effort and expense to produce offspring. Before
participating in the Oocyte Transfer program, it is
important for each Owner/Lessee to know the regulations
of their breed registry regarding the possibility of
registering any resulting foals.
Donor mares participating in the program must be housed
at the Harris Equine Hospital, Inc. to allow us to
closely monitor the mare's ovarian activity, synchronize
recipient and donor mare cycles, and arrange semen
shipment at the appropriate time.
